BIOGRAPHY: The sixth and last son of Joseph and Jane Gorton, was born at "Brothers" on the 23rd of October, 1859. His baptism was on the 4th of December, 1859. With the family moving to Clarencetown when Edwin was but six months old, his earliest recollections of the old cattle-run below the Brothers Mountains would have come from the frequent visits to the property with his parents. He attended school in Clarencetown and had a fairly eventful youth. Edwim Arthur Gorton and Eleanor Jnae Price were married at St John's Church, Stroud on the 26th of February, 1884. There was but one child of the marriage, Elma Jane Clarice, who was born on the 5th of April, 1889. Throughout his working life, Edwin was a farmer on his property at Banfield. Dairying was his main occupation until his retirement. On the 21st of May, 1939 his wife, Eleanor Jane died. She was aged almost 79 years. Edwin Arthur died on the 29th of August, 1944, aged 84 years. His death marked the end of a Generation of Gortons, he being the last surviving member of the family of 15 children born to Joseph and Jane Gorton, the births spanning the years from 1840 to 1863. During his life Edwin Arthur Gorton was always a man who inspired trust. He was, for example, for many years a juror and served on the jury of several very important court cases. With his eldest brother, Joseph Ambrose, he was appointed as one of the executors of his father's will. Having only but one child of their own, Edwin and Jane (by which name his wife was called) took their niece, Janet Weller, into their home and cared for her following the death of the child's father. Janet was the daughter of Edwin's younger sister, Emily Ellen.
