BIOGRAPHY: The first child of Joseph and Jane Gorton
spent most of her young life with her family on the property called "Brothers"
in the shadow mountain range of the same name. In April, 1860, Janet moved
into Clarencetown with the family, to take up residence at the "Fitzroy Inn"
which her father had just acquired. Just two members of the family remained at
the old station. On the 14th of February, 1861, she was married to William
McKee. He was a farmer who had taken up land at Smith's Creek, near
Copmanhurst on the Clarence river, New South Wales. The marriage, which took
place at her parents home, was solemnised by Rev. A.M.Sherriff of the
Presbyterian Church. At the time of the wedding Janet was 20 years of age and
William was aged 31. They began their life together in a pioneering situation,
where there was any amount of work, but little money. Nevertheless, Janet was
very happy; she was used to work, and William was a good and kindly husband.
After a time there was a baby coming. The child duly arrived, a little girl
whom they baptised Mary Jane, but later she was always known as "Polly". Some
two years later a son was born to the McKee family, baptised as William
George. The hapiness of Janet and William was but for a few short years. After
the birth of her second baby she was not well. In February, 1867, Janet
developed a simple cold but her condition grew worse. Medical care was unable
to improve her serious state, and by the 7th of March, 1867, Janet McKee had
passed away. She died of pneumonia at the age of 27 years, only six years of
married life. Her sorrowing husband cared for the small son, while his three
spinster sisters brought up Polly until she was old enough to return to her
father. Janet McKee's mortal remains were buried in the Anglican Cemetry,
Grafton.
