BIOGRAPHY: Joseph and Jane
Gorton's second son was born on the 15th of December, 1850. The early
years of his life were spent with the family below the timbered range
called the "Brothers", from which the cattle-run took its name. Joseph
Ambrose attended Clarencetown School from the time when the family took
up residence there in 1860. On leaving school he went to work on the
property with his brother George, and sister Charlotte. He developed
into a fine horseman, a fact which was often proven during the mustering
of the Durham bullocks on the steep sides and rocky gullies of the
Brothers Range. He eventually married Jessie Amelia Farley (the youngest
sister of Mary Ann, who had married John Gorton of "Glenholme",
Washpool, a first cousin of Joseph Ambrose Gorton). Naturally, there
were often visits on horseback across the country between "Glenholme"
and "Brothers" families. Joseph and Jessie had two sons and four
daughters. Their eldest child, Tryphena Sarah Jane ("Phena") was born on
the 24th of February, 1881 and died on the 31st of October, 1971 at the
age of 90 years. Joseph Ambrose and his elder son, Clarence purchased a
considerable area of grazing and fattening country which was originally
part of the old "Brothers Station" held on lease by Joseph Gorton, Snr.
Joseph Ambrose Gorton's property included the whole of Brothers Mountain
Range and the region of the Little Black Camp Creek, where the shocking
massacre of the Aborigines is said to have taken place. The area of
freehold land amounted to 2,530 1/2 acres. ( The total area of land
owned by Joseph Gorton, Snr, his sons George, Joseph and grandson,
Clarence Gorton was 4,545 1/2 acres, all of which was part of the
"Brothers Station" on Black Camp Creek and the Williams River in earlier
years.) In about 1894, Joseph Ambrose Gorton sold a spotted roan Durham
bullock to Mr S.J. Robards, a Clarencetown butcher, which was to break
all previous records of size and weight for a fat bullock. The animal,
which was bred by Joseph Ambrose Gorton from stock he had brought from
the A.A.Company, tipped the scales with a depressed weight of 1,695
pounds; Joseph Ambrose received less than 5 pounds for it. The beast was
about six years old. During his life, Joseph Ambrose was a quiet,
serious man, with a deep sense of responsibilty. He was a devoutly
christian man, whose principles were a reflection of his spiritual life,
enriched by prayer and regular reading of the New Testaments. He had a
deep sense of humour, which often expressed in droll and waggish
remarks. Joseph Ambrose Gorton died on the 21st of July, 1904 at the age
of 54 years. He was well-prepared for death and hid deep faith was most
apparent when it was put to its final test. He was buried, following a
funeral service in St Thomas' Church, Glen William, in the Churchyard
where the remains of so many of the Gorton family have been laid to
final rest. His good wife, Jessie Amelia, was buried beside Joseph
following her death on the 10th of August, 1941 at the age of 87
years.
